How to read these numbers — Frontier Airlines publishes these limits in inches — the unit its airport sizers are built to. The centimetre figures are our own conversion, always rounded down. Airlines that print both units often print two figures that don't agree with each other — sometimes looser, sometimes stricter. When they disagree we go by the airline's own unit and round the other one down. Packing to our number keeps you inside the real limit.
What to expect
Frontier includes one personal item free on every fare, and on the base fare it is the only bag you get without paying. The limit is 18 × 14 × 8 in (45.7 × 35.5 × 20.3 cm), up to 35 lb, and it must fit under the seat in front of you. That is larger than the strict personal items low-cost travellers expect, so a well-chosen bag often removes any need to pay for the overhead carry-on at all. Wheels, handles and straps count, and Frontier checks the size at boarding.
Soft bag vs hard case
When the personal item is your whole allowance, every inch counts. Frontier's 18 × 14 × 8 in is generous for a personal item, but it is checked at boarding and the wheels and handles are included in the measurement. A soft, frameless bag packs to the edges and compresses into the sizer; a rigid case built to exactly 18 × 14 × 8 in has no give if it sits a few millimetres over. The 35 lb cap is easy to reach once this is the only bag.
Boarding tips
- On the base fare this is your only free bag, so pack it as the whole trip rather than as the extra.
- At 18 × 14 × 8 in it is bigger than most low-cost personal items, so a good backpack here often saves paying for the carry-on entirely.
