Frontier Airlines — official cabin limits

Allowance Max dimensions (inches — the airline's own figure) Second line: our conversion Max weight
Free personal item 18 × 14 × 8 in ≈ 45.7 × 35.5 × 20.3 cm 35 lb ≈ 15.8 kg
Carry-on 24 × 16 × 10 in ≈ 60.9 × 40.6 × 25.4 cm 35 lb ≈ 15.8 kg

How to read these numbersFrontier Airlines publishes these limits in inches — the unit its airport sizers are built to. The centimetre figures are our own conversion, always rounded down. Airlines that print both units often print two figures that don't agree with each other — sometimes looser, sometimes stricter. When they disagree we go by the airline's own unit and round the other one down. Packing to our number keeps you inside the real limit.

What to expect

Frontier gives every ticket one free personal item of 18 × 14 × 8 in (45.7 × 35.5 × 20.3 cm), and on the base fare that is the only bag included. The overhead carry-on is larger than most, 24 × 16 × 10 in (60.9 × 40.6 × 25.4 cm), but it is a paid add-on unless you buy a bundle or hold Elite Gold status or above. Both bags must weigh no more than 35 lb including handles, wheels and straps, a limit most US carriers never publish. Frontier checks the size at boarding, so measure at the widest point.

Soft bag vs hard case

Frontier's carry-on allowance is roomy at 24 × 16 × 10 in, but the 35 lb weight cap is the real ceiling: a rigid case spends that weight before you have packed anything. The wheels, handles and straps all count toward the limit, and Frontier checks bags at the gate. A soft, frameless bag compresses into the sizer, where a hard shell sitting a few millimetres over gets pulled.

Boarding tips

  • The personal item is free on every fare; the overhead carry-on is not, so on the base fare you either pack into the personal item or pay for the carry-on.
  • Frontier does not publish a fixed carry-on price. It is cheapest added when you book and most expensive at the airport, so add bags in advance through My Trips.
  • A bundle (Economy, Premium or Business) or Elite Gold status and above includes the carry-on, and the bundle is often cheaper than the bag alone.
  • Both bags share a 35 lb limit including wheels and handles. There is no separate lighter allowance for the personal item.
  • If the overhead bins fill up, Frontier gate-checks the carry-on at no extra charge.

Common questions

Is the carry-on bag free on Frontier?

+
No. Frontier includes one free personal item of 18 x 14 x 8 in on every fare, but the overhead carry-on of 24 x 16 x 10 in is a paid add-on. It is included only if you buy a bundle (Economy, Premium or Business) or hold Elite Gold status or above. On the base fare you pay for it separately.

How much does a Frontier carry-on bag cost?

+
Frontier does not publish a fixed price. The fee is dynamic and depends on the route and when you add it. It is cheapest during booking and highest at the airport, so add it in advance through My Trips. A bundle that already includes the carry-on is often cheaper than buying the bag on its own.

What is Frontier's carry-on weight limit?

+
35 lb (about 15.9 kg), including handles, wheels and straps. The same 35 lb limit applies to the personal item. This is stricter than most US carriers, which publish no cabin weight limit at all.

Does Frontier count wheels and handles in the size?

+
Yes. Both the 24 x 16 x 10 in carry-on limit and the 18 x 14 x 8 in personal-item limit include handles, wheels and straps. Measure your bag at its widest point, because Frontier checks the size at boarding.

What happens if the overhead bins are full?

+
If there is no bin space, Frontier gate-checks your carry-on at no additional charge. A paid carry-on keeps its status; it simply travels in the hold for that flight.

What is Vilanera?

+
Vilanera designs premium backpacks, bags and accessories for the way you dress — parent-aware on demand. We built this checker because we kept doing the same maths ourselves: every airline sets its own limits, publishes them in its own units, and changes them without warning. So we read each carrier's official policy at the source, stamp it with the date we checked, and let you measure your own bag against it — free, and with no sign-up.
