Where United Airlines contradicts itself
Found on the airline's own pages, not our reading of them.
- United prints its own centimetres beside the inches, and the two pairs are rounded in opposite directions. The carry-on 22 × 14 × 9 in appears as 56 × 35 × 23 cm, but 22 in is 55.88 cm and 9 in is 22.86, so two of those three figures run slightly looser than United's own inch limit.
- The personal item drifts the other way: 17 × 10 × 9 in appears as 22 × 25 × 43 cm, up to 8.6 mm tighter than the inches it translates. Same page, opposite directions, so we show the inches and our own rounded-down conversion.

How to read these numbers — United Airlines publishes these limits in inches — the unit its airport sizers are built to. The centimetre figures are our own conversion, always rounded down. Airlines that print both units often print two figures that don't agree with each other — sometimes looser, sometimes stricter. When they disagree we go by the airline's own unit and round the other one down. Packing to our number keeps you inside the real limit.
What to expect
United allows one carry-on of 22 × 14 × 9 in (55.8 × 35.5 × 22.8 cm), handle and wheels included, plus one personal item of 17 × 10 × 9 in (43.1 × 25.4 × 22.8 cm) that fits under the seat. United publishes no weight limit for either. The catch is the fare: on Basic Economy you get the personal item only and a carry-on has to be checked, unless you are flying to South America, across the Atlantic or across the Pacific.
Soft bag vs hard case
The carry-on depth of 9 in (22.8 cm) is measured with the handle and wheels included, which is exactly where hard shells lose: the wheel housing counts. A soft, frameless bag compresses into the sizer where a rigid case sitting a few millimetres over gets pulled. United still has bag sizers at the airport and tells you to use them.
Boarding tips
- Basic Economy is the trap: unless you are flying to South America, across the Atlantic or across the Pacific, the carry-on has to be checked, and United states that gate-checking is never free on that fare.
- United publishes no weight limit for either bag; only the size is stated.
- Handle and wheels count in the carry-on measurement, and United still runs bag sizers at the airport.
- Premier members, anyone on their reservation, Star Alliance Gold members and primary holders of a qualifying MileagePlus card keep a free carry-on in Basic Economy. The United Gateway and MileagePlus Select cards do not qualify.
