Where United Airlines contradicts itself

- United prints 22 × 25 × 43 cm beside 17 × 10 × 9 in, but those centimetres are rounded down from the inches, by up to 8.6 mm on the 9 in side. The carry-on pair on the same page is rounded the other way. We publish the inches and our own rounded-down conversion rather than either of United's pairs.

How to read these numbers — United Airlines publishes these limits in inches — the unit its airport sizers are built to. The centimetre figures are our own conversion, always rounded down. Airlines that print both units often print two figures that don't agree with each other — sometimes looser, sometimes stricter. When they disagree we go by the airline's own unit and round the other one down. Packing to our number keeps you inside the real limit.
What to expect
United publishes exact personal item dimensions, which not every US carrier does: 17 × 10 × 9 in (43.1 × 25.4 × 22.8 cm), and it must fit under the seat in front of you. It is free on every fare, and on most Basic Economy routes it is the only bag you get, which makes it the most consequential number United publishes. United publishes no weight limit for it.
Soft bag vs hard case
When Basic Economy comes down to this one bag, the under-seat space is your entire allowance, and that space changes with the aircraft and the seat. A soft, frameless bag compresses into whatever is there; a rigid case built to exactly 17 × 10 × 9 in has no give when a seat leg or an entertainment box intrudes.
Boarding tips
- On most Basic Economy routes this is your only bag, so pack it as the whole trip rather than as the extra.
- United publishes no weight limit; only the size is stated.
- United states the handle-and-wheels rule for the carry-on and says nothing about it here, so measure your bag at its widest point.
- On CommutAir-operated United Express flights the personal item is the only bag allowed in the cabin.
