Where American Airlines contradicts itself

- American prints 59 × 39 × 23 cm beside 22 × 14 × 9 in. That is not a conversion — 22 in is 55.9 cm — so its centimetres run about 3 cm looser than its own inch limit.
- The personal item drifts the other way: 18 × 14 × 8 in is printed as 45 × 35 × 20 cm, but 18 in is 45.7 cm. Same page, two mismatches, opposite directions.

Airlines that print both units often print two figures that don't agree with each other — sometimes looser, sometimes stricter. What to expect
American is one of the few US carriers that publishes exact personal item dimensions: 18 × 14 × 8 in (45.7 × 35.5 × 20.3 cm), and it must fit under the seat in front of you. It's free on every fare alongside the 22 × 14 × 9 in carry-on, and American publishes no weight limit for either. On top of the allowance, diaper bags (one per child), breast pumps, a small soft-sided cooler of breast milk, child safety seats, strollers and medical or mobility devices all travel free.
Soft bag vs hard case
Under the seat, structure is the enemy: the 8 in (20 cm) depth is the binding figure, and a soft bag squeezes into it where a rigid mini-case won't. A frameless daypack that measures an honest 18 × 14 × 8 packed is the sweet spot for AA's under-seat space.
Boarding tips
- Measure your bag packed — a full backpack easily bulges past the 8 in (20 cm) depth.
- American publishes no weight limit: dense items like a laptop, chargers and books can all ride under the seat.
- Diaper bags, breast pumps, child seats, strollers and mobility devices don't count as your personal item.
- On American Eagle regional jets the personal item is the one bag guaranteed in the cabin — bigger bags get valet-tagged at the gate.
