How to read these numbers — Air Canada publishes these limits in centimetres. The inch figures are our own conversion, always rounded down, never up. Airlines that print both units often print two figures that don't agree with each other — sometimes looser, sometimes stricter. When they disagree we go by the airline's own unit and round the other one down. Packing to our number keeps you inside the real limit.
What to expect
Air Canada allows one standard carry-on of 55 × 40 × 23 cm (21.6 × 15.7 × 9 in) plus one personal item of 43 × 33 × 16 cm (16.9 × 12.9 × 6.2 in), both measured with wheels and handles included. There is no weight limit, but you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead bin unaided. The catch is the fare: on an Economy Basic ticket bought on or after 3 January 2025, travel within Canada or to and from the US, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean allows the personal item only, and any larger bag has to be checked.
Soft bag vs hard case
Air Canada publishes no weight limit for cabin baggage, only a size, and it enforces that size with automated sizers before security and at the gate. Wheels and handles count toward the 55 cm and 43 cm limits, so a hard shell whose wheel housing pushes it a few millimetres over gets pulled where a soft bag compresses. The real variable here is the fare and the route, not the bag.
Boarding tips
- There is no weight limit; the only rule is that you can lift the bag into the bin yourself.
- On an Economy Basic fare within Canada or to and from the US, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, you get the personal item only. A bigger bag is checked, and bringing it to the gate triggers a handling fee of CA/US $65 to $78.
- Basic fares on many other international routes still include the carry-on; the restriction is route-specific, so check your itinerary.
- Wheels and handles are included in the size, and Air Canada uses sizers before security and at the gate.
- Travelling with a lap infant adds one extra standard item for the child, such as a diaper bag.
