How to Fix a Backpack Zipper (Before You Replace the Bag)

A backpack almost never dies of the thing you worried about when you bought it. The fabric outlives you. The seams hold. What goes is the zip, and it goes quietly: one morning it closes, and half a second later it has opened again behind your hand. Most people meet this moment, conclude the bag is finished, and buy another one.

In most cases nothing is broken. A single component the size of a fingernail has worn a fraction of a millimetre out of shape, and it costs a couple of dollars to replace. It's not a secret, exactly — it's just that most of what's written about zip repair barely mentions that component, and several of the most-read guides never name it at all.

The short version

The slider — the little metal carriage you pull — is the part that fails. The teeth are usually fine. A zip that opens behind the slider has a worn slider, not a broken zip, and the durable fix is a new one: cheap, and about fifteen minutes. Squeezing the old slider with pliers genuinely works, but it's a repair with a short half-life. Buy the replacement by the number stamped on the back; the letters are not a reliable code. If your zip has a shiny coated tape, several standard techniques will ruin it. The popular quick fixes — oil, glue, a screwdriver — all work often enough to keep getting recommended; the case against them is about what they cost you later, and that's a judgement call we lay out rather than make for you.

What follows is organised by what your zip is actually doing, because that's the thing you know when you go looking.

The six parts, named

Almost every disagreement about zip repair comes from people using the same word for different things. It's worth thirty seconds to fix the vocabulary, because the rest of this guide — and the part you'll end up buying — depends on it.

  2. Tape — The woven strip the chain is sewn to. If this tears, the zip is no longer a home repair.
  3. Slider — The carriage that meshes and unmeshes the chain. Almost always the part that has actually failed.
  4. Pull tab — What you hold. It hangs from a small loop cast into the slider — if the loop survives, a broken tab is a knot, not a repair.
  5. Chain — The interlocking teeth themselves: a continuous nylon coil, or separate moulded teeth. Which one you have decides the replacement part.
  6. Bottom stop — Closes the bottom end on a zip that isn't meant to separate — most bag zips.

Before anything: the slider is the part that breaks

A zip has three parts that can fail — the tape it's sewn to, the teeth or coil, and the slider. Only one of them is doing mechanical work every time you use the bag.

The slider is a small casting, usually zinc alloy, with two internal channels that pinch the two rows of teeth together at the exact angle that makes them interlock. Every pull drags metal over those teeth. Add grit — sand, trail dust, the crumbs from the bottom of the bag — and you have a slow lapping process. Over a few thousand cycles the channels open up by a fraction of a millimetre. That's all it takes. The slider still glides, still looks identical, but it no longer brings the two sides together tightly enough, so they mesh at the slider and part again a centimetre behind it.

Nothing is broken. A worn part has drifted out of tolerance, and a new one restores it.

This matters because the standard advice sends you the other way. When a zip opens behind the slider, people conclude the teeth are damaged and start bending them with pliers, or decide the bag is finished. Both conclusions come from looking at the wrong component.

It zips, then opens behind the slider

The classic, and there are two answers — a fast one and a lasting one. Both are legitimate; they just buy you different amounts of time.

The field fix is to squeeze the slider gently back into shape with needle-nose pliers, gripping the top and bottom plates at the narrow rear end — the tail the tape exits from, not the wide mouth. Tiny pressure, then test, then repeat. It often works immediately, and it will get you through the trip.

What almost nobody tells you is what you've actually done. Zinc alloy castings have very little give: bent cold, they either crack outright or take a permanent set and start drifting open again within days. Squeeze unevenly and one channel now presses harder than the other, and the high side quietly grinds the edge of the tape — turning a cheap slider swap into a full zip replacement. Repair people who do this regularly tend to describe it as a delaying tactic rather than a repair — which matches what long-term owners report, though how long it holds clearly varies.

The lasting fix is a new slider, and it's a fifteen-minute job. Work the old slider to the top of the tape, remove the top stop on one side, slide the worn one off, feed both tapes evenly into the mouth of the new one, pull down to check both sides engage, and fit a new stop — a crimped metal one, or a few tight stitches across the tape if you don't have one. That's the entire procedure. The part costs less than a coffee.

The only genuinely hard bit is buying the right one, which is why it has its own section below.

The slider has come off one side

Almost always because the top stop failed and the slider ran off the end of one tape. Once it's hanging on a single side, forcing the loose tape back into the front of the slider will crush the coil.

The method is to go in from the top, not the front. Remove the top stop on the affected side, take the slider off the tape entirely, line both tapes up so the bottom teeth sit level, then feed both into the slider's top channels together and draw it down. If the coil is undamaged it will engage. Then fit a new stop so it can't happen again — because it will, otherwise, in the same place.

There's a second route, and it's the most-published one: put a flat screwdriver into the mouth of the slider, prise it wider, push the tape back in, then squeeze it closed again. Several brand guides describe it, and it's the top answer on the biggest forum thread about this question. It clearly works often enough to keep being recommended, and if you're away from home with no parts, it may be the only move you have.

The argument against it is about odds, not principle. Zinc castings are brittle, and prising loads one at a single point; repair people who do this daily report a high failure rate, and when it fails the slider snaps rather than bends. Even when it survives, it rarely closes back to symmetrical tolerances, so you get a slider that drags and reopens under load. We'd re-thread from the top instead — but if you try the screwdriver, know you're spending the slider to save the trip.

The slider is stuck

First, look before you pull. Nine times out of ten there's lining, a label, or a loose thread drawn into the mouth of the slider. Pulling harder is how a jam becomes a tear.

Hold the fabric taut with one hand, work the slider back a millimetre at a time with the other, and use tweezers to ease the trapped material out as it releases. Patience genuinely does the work here.

If it's grit rather than fabric, clean the track — a soft toothbrush, warm water, a rinse — and dry it before lubricating. Then use a dry lubricant: paraffin or beeswax rubbed along the teeth, a graphite pencil, or a purpose-made zip lubricant.

Which brings us to the thing we have to disagree with in public.

Here the published advice genuinely splits, and it's worth laying both sides out rather than picking one and pretending it's settled.

Several guides — including one from a bag brand — recommend spraying a penetrating oil such as WD-40 onto a cloth and working it into the stuck section. The case for it is simply that it works: it's a solvent and water displacer, it dissolves the gunk binding a seized slider, and it will very often free a zip within a minute. If you're stuck, it is not bad advice.

The case against is about the second and third month, not the first. What frees the zip is the solvent, which flashes off; what stays is a light oil film on the tape and the fabric around it, and that film holds every grain of dust the bag meets. The concern — widely reported by gear-repair sources, though not something we've measured — is that you end up with a mild abrasive paste in the slider channels, quietly speeding up the wear that causes the original failure. On coated fabrics there's a second worry, since solvents are unkind to coatings.

Our own preference is a dry lubricant — wax or graphite — because it does the same job with nothing left behind to collect grit, and because it can't harm a coating. But if you've used oil for years without trouble, we're not going to tell you that you imagined it. The sensible middle, if you do reach for oil: apply it on a cloth rather than spraying, keep it off the tape and the fabric, and wipe the excess off afterwards.

The pull tab has snapped

Check one thing before you do anything: whether the small loop on the slider body — the bridge the tab hung from — is still there.

If it is, this isn't a repair, it's a knot. A loop of paracord, a split ring, a bootlace. Many people never go back to the original tab, and a cord pull is easier to find with cold hands.

If the bridge itself has sheared off the casting, there's nothing to attach anything to and nothing that glue will hold — it's a load-bearing part. That's a new slider, which you were arguably due anyway.

Teeth are missing or crushed

This is the one where the honest answer is no.

A slider can only close teeth that are present. If a section is gone, the slider will part the zip every time it reaches the gap, whatever you do behind it. There's a widely shared trick of stitching across the gap to bridge it — it holds for a few openings and then tears the tape it's anchored to.

Some guides suggest gluing the zip down a side at a time, clamping it, and leaving it flat overnight to cure. It does hold — for a while, and it can get a bag through a trip. The trade is that adhesive sets rigid across a component whose whole job is to flex, so the glued section eventually cracks under the slider, and you've now added a stiff contaminated strip to a repair a professional would otherwise have done cleanly. Reasonable as a get-me-home measure; a poor idea if you intend to keep the bag.

Missing teeth means the whole zip gets replaced, which means unpicking the seam that holds it into the panel and sewing a new one in. That is a machine-and-experience job, not a kitchen-table one.

If your zip is water-resistant, most advice doesn't apply

This is the case no one on the first page covers, and it's the one most likely to be on a technical backpack.

A water-resistant zip — YKK's AquaGuard is the one you'll meet most — isn't a different mechanism, it's a normal coil zip with a polyurethane film laminated over the tape, mounted in reverse so the flat coated face points outwards and the coil sits inside. Two consequences follow, and both matter.

The first is that you must keep tools off it. Pliers, brushes, anything abrasive on that outer face will strip the film, and the film is the entire reason the zip exists. Once it's gone it doesn't go back on. The same applies to washing: brush the fabric if you must, but leave the zip tape alone — a point Herschel makes in its own care instructions, warning that zips often carry a water-resistant coating that a brush will remove. It's one of several places where the way you clean a bag decides how long its hardware lasts.

The second is a buying trap. Because the tab sits on the smooth side rather than the toothed side, a reverse-coil zip needs a reverse-tab slider. Sailrite, which supplies these parts, is explicit: on a standard coil zip the pull sits on the toothed side, and only a reverse-tab slider puts it on the smooth side. They stock them in #5 and #10. Fit a standard slider to a reverse coil and it will not work — and you'll assume you measured wrong.

If the coating has already gone cloudy and started to flake, that's age — UV and moisture breaking the film down over years. The zip will keep working. The weather resistance won't come back, and no amount of re-gluing restores it. Where “water-resistant” honestly ends and “waterproof” begins is its own subject — we’ve drawn that line separately.

Buying the right replacement slider

This is where most home repairs actually fail: not the fitting, the ordering.

Look at the back of the slider. There's usually a number stamped on it — 3, 5, 8, 10 — and that number is the zip's size, roughly the width of the closed chain in millimetres. It's small; a phone camera at full zoom reads it more easily than your eyes do.

Ignore the letters. This is worth stating plainly, because a lot of what's written about zip sizing insists that the letter beside the number encodes the chain type — C for coil, V for moulded. Sailrite, who sell the parts, say otherwise: the letters sometimes indicate compatibility and sometimes are simply the manufacturer's batch run. The number is the part you can trust. Work out the chain type by looking at it instead.

Then identify the chain. Two families cover nearly every backpack:

  • Coil — a continuous nylon spiral, like a stretched spring stitched along the tape. Flexible, curves around corners, quiet. Most bag zips.
  • Moulded tooth — individual flat teeth, distinctly separate, usually acetal resin. Stiffer, chunkier, common on heavy-duty closures.

The two are not interchangeable. A #5 coil slider will not run a #5 moulded chain, because the internal channel shape is different. Size and type both have to match.

No number? Double-pull sliders often have nowhere to stamp one. Measure the closed chain across its width in millimetres and match it to the nearest size — it won't land exactly, but it will land close enough to identify.

Locking or not is the one choice that's genuinely yours. A locking slider has a small pin that holds position until you pull the tab; a non-locking one moves whenever anything tugs it. Either will fit, provided the size and chain type are right.

The contested fixes, side by side

Most of what you'll find recommended for zips falls into a middle category: it works, and it costs you something later. Whether that trade is worth taking depends on where you are and how much you care about the bag — which is your call, not ours. Here is the trade in each case, stated plainly.

One honest caveat about all of the above. We build and write about bags; we are not a repair workshop, and we haven't run these methods across a hundred zips to see which ones hold. What's here is the mechanism as far as it's understood, plus what repair people and long-term owners consistently report. Where those two agree we've said so plainly. Where they don't — the oil question, mostly — we've given you both sides, because a guide that sounds certain about something contested is just a guide that hasn't looked.

When to stop

Three things put a zip beyond a home repair, and recognising them early saves you from making the professional's job harder and more expensive:

  • Torn tape. If the woven tape holding the chain to the bag is split or frayed through, there's nothing sound to anchor to.
  • Missing teeth. More than a couple, on a seam that carries load.
  • A failed starter box on a fully separating zip.

At that point you have three routes. A specialist gear-repair shop is the best outcome for a good bag — they have machines that will sew through 1000D Cordura and the experience to take a panel apart. A local tailor or cobbler is cheaper and faster and perfectly capable of swapping a slider, though not every one of them has a machine that will handle heavy pack fabric. Or the warranty.

The warranty route is worth checking first and is worth understanding before you commit, because the time cost is real. Topo Designs, to take a brand that publishes its process, asks for a claim form with the item, purchase date, order number and description, then a shipping stage, then the repair — and says outright it can take four to six weeks. They also do something more useful than most: if you can't wait, they tell you to take it to a local tailor and claim the cost back. Check whether yours does the same before you post a bag away for six weeks.

On cost, the shape is more reliable than any figure we could quote you: swapping a slider is a small job priced accordingly, replacing a whole zip is several times that, because it means unpicking and rebuilding a seam. On an inexpensive bag the second number will exceed what the bag is worth. That is a real answer, and it's the one point where replacing the bag is the rational call — not because the zip failed, but because the repair costs more than the thing.

We've quoted dollars throughout because that's where most of the parts supply sits, and the figures land close enough in euros that the decision doesn't change: a slider is pocket change on either side of the Atlantic, a full zip replacement is a real bill. What does differ is the warranty route — European arms of the same brands often run separate repair policies from their US operations, so check the terms for your region rather than the ones you read about.

The bag that doesn't get to this point

Read enough of these repairs and a pattern shows up that has nothing to do with zips. The bags that come apart at the slider are usually the ones where the zip was the cheapest part of the build — a component chosen to hit a price, sitting under a fabric chosen to look expensive.

The reverse is quietly true too. A well-specified zip on a bag that isn't habitually overstuffed will outlast several cheap ones, and when it eventually wears — because it will, it's the only moving part — it wears in the ordinary way, on a size you can identify and replace in an afternoon. That's not durability as a marketing word. It's just what happens when the moving part is treated as the important one.

Which is the question worth asking of the next bag, and it's a duller question than the ones usually asked about backpacks: not what it's made of, but what happens to it in year four, and whether the part that will fail is one you can buy.
